Relief
And if the body were not the soul, what is the soul?”
––Walt Whitman
“Relief” brings together a series of ceramic drawings and sculptures that explore bodily constraints and limitations—and how each body, with its specific form and function, shapes the ways we relate to one another.
Bodily experiences of constraint and limitation are, in the end, universal. At the same time, they are so specific and private. How does the body shape the way we relate to one another? How do we meet the physical experiences of others who we love and care for, when their experiences are, in a very real sense, inaccessible and inscrutable?
The work in this show reimagines ideas of bodily function and care, It draws on the physicality of clay and the unpredictability of the firing process, my own memories, and tactile objects to build a language of relief both shaped by the body and moving beyond it.
